Build a value proposition people can understand.

Use the five sections below to make the proposition logical before you compress it into a headline. The complete answer stays available here; the PDF gives you a printable working copy.

  1. 01

Choose one priority customer and situation

Describe a group with a shared problem, buying context or event that makes action worthwhile. “Growing businesses” is too broad; “finance teams replacing a manual month-end reconciliation process” gives you something you can investigate.

    Write down

    • Who makes or influences the decision?
    • What are they trying to get done?
    • What makes the existing approach slow, risky, costly or frustrating?
    • What makes the issue important now?
  2. 02

    Describe the useful outcome

Move from what the offer contains to what becomes better for the customer. A capability enables a benefit; the benefit should connect to progress the customer actually values.

    Prompt

After using the offer, what can this customer do more clearly, quickly, safely or confidently?

  3. 03

    Make the real alternative visible

List direct competitors, internal workarounds, combined tools, delay and doing nothing. Your proposition needs to make sense against what the customer would otherwise choose, not only against businesses in the same category.

  4. 04

Add a credible mechanism and evidence

Explain how the offer creates the outcome, then list reasons the customer should believe the promise. Use verifiable method, experience, specificity or evidence. Leave out numbers you cannot support and claims that depend on conditions outside your control.

  5. 05

    Draft, test and revise

Draft for understanding before brevity. Show the wording briefly, then ask what the person thinks the offer is, who it is for, which problem it solves and what they would compare it with. Record repeated misunderstandings and the evidence behind each revision.

For [priority customer] who [important situation or problem], [offer] helps them [useful outcome] through [credible mechanism]. Unlike [real alternative], it [relevant difference].
